I'm looking at a new setup for my work truck. Currently I have 2 Boston Acoustics 6.5"s in the front doors, 2 beat to hell Jensen 6X9"s ( I'm talking they had mud in the voice coils when I got them) and a 10" Sony X plod sub which I just put in tonight. The head unit is a VR3 something. Came from wal-mart. It sounds decent but I want it to sound better. I want the whole setup to match, not 2 different brand speakers with different specs and a crappy HU.
I can't spend to much for this, Anyone have any ideas? The Boston Acoustics sounds pretty good but still open to any ideas.
If you're not adding an amp, look for a speaker that has a high sensitivity. 90db at the minimum and preferably 92db or higher.
I'd keep the fronts and stick these in the back, if they'll fit. If not try these.
As far as head units go, there's a ton to choose from, lots of good ones loaded with features for less than $200. Not sure what your requirements are so I'm hesitant to point one out, but I have this Pioneer in my Windstar and love it. For the money you aren't going to find another unit with so many sound tweaking options. I paid $189 for it 8 months ago, it's down to $129 now. Awesome deal.
If that one's not for you, try and stick with a good name brand like JVC, Kenwood, Sony etc. I'd try to avoid the Boss', Duals' etc.
I have a 1000W amp that powers the 10" x plod. The HU you pointed out does everything I need plus more. I like how the BA came down from the $130 range which is what I payed for the front ones little over 2 years ago.
You'll still pay close to that for the BA's at Crutchfield, which is why I buy from SE. Don't hesitate to buy from SE. They're a great company. I've purchased mucho gear from them and had zero trouble. They ship free and fast too. Crutchfield is great for research but not so much on competitive pricing.
I think you'll be happy with the results of the new head unit pushing the 4 speakers. If not, pop an amp in there later for those too.
