95 stock 460
First thing I did was install a K&N air filter in the stock air box. Then, I removed the air silencers from the air intake hoses, and wrapped the whole air intake assembly in metal insulating tape, to reduce heat.
I then replaced the factory plugs with NGK V-groove plugs. I then turned my attention to the extremely restrictive exhaust. I cut the whole exhaust system off from the catalytic converter back and replaced it with 2.5" straight pipe, custom bent and had it exit right in front of the pass. side rear tire. It sounds great, and is not nearly as loud as I thought it would be.
Before I did my mods, I got a solid 9 mpg on the highway and around town. When I was done, I got 12.5 mpg average.
I let a mechanic friend of mine borrow my truck to move some furniture last week, and he said that it was one of the most responsive and quick full-size pickups he's ever driven
.However, I had to start running premium fuel to keep the motor from pinging. I installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and gauge from Hypertech that was suppose to eliminate any lean fuel mixture problems. But, even though I noticed increased throttle response, and a little bit more power, my truck started pinging again, so I had to put mid-grade in it to prevent the pre-detonation.
