Well I went outside this morning and noticed fluid on the ground. I crawled under and looks to be coolant coming from somewhere above the starter on the passenger side. Popped the hood noticed de-gas bottle was low not empty but low. Filled back up truck starts runs fine ran to grocery store ran fine. Parked it in new spot on drive way and after 5min I see on the ground more fluid. Checked oil looks fine no water in it. The truck is 04 6.0 with 78k no mods other than cat back exhaust. I hope it isnt a head gasket! Any ideas on what it may be? The real bad thing is after being laid off and unemployed for 1-1/2 years I finally am back to work but broke as broke can be trying to save our home.
ok checked that and after looking closely at the fluid it isnt coolant it's clear oily fluid. gonig to let it run of awhile to see if I can see what it may be.
I isnt fuel I didnt taste it. The strange thing is after talking to my wife she said the other morning taking the kids to school she noticed a whine like low powersteering fluid. I checked and it is not registering on the stick in the cap? I got back under the truck to look and the areas around pump and steering box are dry no leaks on driver side? Rolled over to side that leak is showing up and noticed the clear fluid is collected ready to drip off trans lines that run from cooler to trans just so happens the lowest point of the lines are directly below starter. I checked trans fluid and it is full? Sunday I am going to run to Autozone get powersteering fluid drive around for a while come home park sit in a chair with beer outside watch and wait to see if it leaks again to try and catch where it is coming from I guess. Glad I put TV in garage for Superbowl :-)
I once had a leak at one of the hoses to external transmission filter. Apparently the factory clamp got weak and lost the ability to keep the hose tight. Of course, if it's trans fluid the fluid should be red not clear, but then again so should your PS fluid (unless its really dirty and brown). Maybe check to see what color it is by wiping it off on a white paper towel.
It is clear in color, not water because it takes days to evaporate and water beads up on the groud where it puddled. Drove it around sunday got to operating temp came home parked and watched for leak and it never leaked. Will keep trying to locate it if it shows up again
