Heat & engine Temp question
Ok this one has me stumped. It takes FOREVER (and a day) for my expedition to heat up on the inside with the heater on full blast. Also, the engine doesn't (and hasn't) ever seem to warm up to anything above about 1/5th of the operating range on teh gauge. (it just barely gets into the white line, above cold)
I've already replaced all of the engine temp sensors, and installed a "hotter" thermostat. No change to the operating temp. I'm not loosing any coolant anywhere, plugs are fine and not showing any headgasket issues. It just doesn't warm up!
Anyone got any ideas where to start? I don't have any codes showing up either. The only thing I can think of is that the heater core is starting to go (since it "gurgles") but I'm still thinking that if the engine doesn't get warm, the heater system won't ever really warm up either.
I might try using one of those infra red temp sensors under the hood to see if the engine is warming up. You could also remove the thermostat put it in water and heat with a thermometer to see what temp it opens at. Even new parts are bad sometimes.
So the first thing I would do is ensure the engine and cooling system are getting up to temp.
Keep in mind that on really cold days immediately blasting the fan inside is going to cause a slower warm up because the heater core is a radiator too. You are running sub zero air through it and expecting the coolant to warm up. Run the fan on a lower speed until the engine builds some temp.
