My Ford 1987 Light Truck Specs book says for the 8.8- and 9.0-inch rear end (conventional and traction lock) the minimum torque required to tighten the pinion flange nut to obtain correct pininon bearing preload is 160 foot pounds. A footnote says that if the preload exceeds spec before this torque is obtained to install a new spacer. As for the preload, it says of the 9.0-inch rear end that pinion bearing preload should be 8-14 ft lb for the original, and 16-29 for new.

I kinda figured you would have. Sorry about the delay. Hey, I once replaced the pinion seal on my '77 F150 and didn't even know there was a torque spec. I just cranked on it till I thought it was good and it ran fine.
