Fast Idling
I just bought a 1998 ranger xlt 4.0 v-6 with 175000 miles on it . It run will good,but when you first crank it up, its idling way to fast, for a couple of seconds then slow down,Is there any thing i can do to slow it down some.

first check for codes!!!.Then cheapet and easiest thing to do with a bad idle is to clean the throttle body out with throttle body cleaner, clean the idle air control valve out with throttle body cleaner and clean the MAF with CRC maf cleaner...also make sure the air intake and air filter are ok. Then pull the neg battery cable for a bit to reset the pcm........if that does not work you move on to sensors.......

It's normal for the computer to idle up the 4.0L fast on a cold start, like 1500rpm or so & slowly drop to around 750-800 as the engine warms up. but we don't know how high "way to fast" is, so post an RPM number.
Could be an IAC (Idle Air Control) problem as has been suggested, if it's rpm is really high. like over 2K rpm on a cold start, or if it's rpm is hanging up when coming to a stop, ect.
So we need some more input.
