I've changed my mind about something. On a recent thread on the 87-91 Fords, I mad comments about not really liking the way these trucks look. I think it was the butterface thread. I had an '89 1/2 ton for a very short amount of time and really didn't like the way it looked. Since then I have always felt like they were butt ugly. Well, I've sort of changed my mind on that. I still don't like the way the 1/2 tons of this vintage look, but I have to admit that I have developed a liking for the 3/4 ton 4x4 versions of this truck. I don't know what it is, but there is just something about that front end design that works when the truck sits a little higher off the ground than a 1/2 ton. I'm not talking about body lifts or any of that stuff. I'm talking about the stock 3/4 ton 4x4's visual appeal vs. that of the stock 1/2 ton 2wd appeal. One design still looks ugly to me, and the other just works.
So, I have added and '87 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel to my wish list and moved a 1/2 ton dentside 4x4 down the priority scale. Unless the Lord dumps some unexpected moolah into my lap, I am going to have to wait before getting a 3/4 ton 4x4 of the 87-91 vintage. I've had my Chevy 4x4 for only 4 months and have too much money in it to recoup everything I've spent on it. I gotta drive it for another year and a half or so before I can sell it for what I know it will bring so I can get back into a Ford truck. I'm not complaining. My Chevy is a good truck, and I don't mind driving it for a while longer. I just wanted to let y'all know that I have become a fan of the 87-91 3/4 ton 4x4. My hope is to find one of the two tone versions, maybe red/white, dark blue/white, ?/white.
The tu-tone 3/4 tons 87-91 do look great compared to a basic half ton 2wd. I know where your comming from saying this. I've had my 3/4 ton 4x4 Diesel (solid color) from brand new, and it did always look "mean" in a way. My new replacement truck, 1989 2wd F150 just doesn't look like it at all, like it's the same model ofcourse, but looks soooo different to me.
There both Customs, super basic witch is what I like best!
I guess the half tons don't look as good as the 3/4 ton 4x4 simply because the front lights look to big compared to the rest of the truck, but on a 4x4 it makes it look bigger, as a whole and look meany I guess.
Anyways whenever you do find a good 4x4 Diesel you want, let us know in the Pre-Powerstroke forum and you'll learn all about 'em and what to look for when buying.
Ha ha, Lew. No gettin into 12pks around here. I don't regret getting this Chevy. It's a good looking truck. I went a little batty at first trying to figure out what it needed to get it running right, but it turned out that it has pretty much the same stuff on it a Ford would (IAC, EGR) that would cause a Ford to run like crap if it needed the parts replaced.
Still, becoming a member here reminded me of how much I really do like Fords. That's what I've driven more than anything else over the years. Gotta lotta history with them.
You're right, John. It's an optical illusion, but it's one that works fairly well. I did find the Australian version, with the regular headlights, to look pretty cool too. That thread is what got me to thinking about the 3/4 ton 4x4.
