Ok so earlyer today i bought a '71 F100 with
Rebuilt 360 Ford Engine with Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifold,
Carter 650cfm AFB Carburetor,
a newly rebuilt C-6 standard transmission with stage 2 shift kit,
new rear brakes,
Flowmaster 40 series 3" exhaust.
now thats the good part, the bad part is
no speakers,
no radio,
Cracked windshield,
Rough Dash,
The middle section of the steering wheel (Where you would press for the horn) is missing.
So a few questions here, i live in a rural part of arizona, there are no dealerships or junkyards for a good 100 miles in each direction, i would like to get
A windshield,
Bucket Seats,
steering wheel Replacement, or just the middle part, whatever its called.
i also had a question, the shifter has an elbow in it that bends almost 90 degrees (Picture Below) is that stock? or was it custom?
The radio issue has been brought up to use a install kit from a Volvo and it works for the newer style radio you could do a search and try to find it there was pictures of the installed radio. For the windshield up to a 79 Ford pick up or bronco will fit.If you wanted to stay with a bench seat up to 96 are bolt ins you just need your seat tracks to bolt to the new seat.
ok i just got done driving it about 115 miles, the steering is very spongy, as in it just absorbs the turn of the wheel for 2 to 3 inches and then starts to turn, it seems to just have free travel so i am constantly turning the wheel back and forth to get it to stay in the lane, any ideas as to what is causing this?
If you have a 3 spoke wheel and need a center horn button I've got one with good prongs and the spring that goes under it. PM me for details if interested.
The front end is all mounted in rubber. There are bushings at the ends of the I beams and trailing arms. They are likely dried out and brittle. You can get a stock rubber replacement kit or a urethane setup that will firm things up quite a bit.
Also take a look at the tie rod ends; slide under the truck behind the front wheels and look at the tie rods while someone sits inside the truck and rocks the steering wheel back and forth; look for anything that has slop in it.
well I talked to my neighbor today, he is an older guy and knows alot about the trucks from his time, he says there is an adjustment in the steering gear box and that if i tighten it down all the way then back it off a half turn it should fix the slack in my steering.
On other news i hit the door panels with some steel wool today, didn't take the paint off just the over-spray from when the last owner painted the inside of the door panels (without removing them from the truck i might add) and smoothed things out a bit, i will probably take them off next week sand them with the sander and spray a coat of (Strictly preservatory) matte black spray paint.
