Hey, guys... I haven't forgotten. My truck is so dirty right now that I don't think the steps are clean enough for good pictures (it's that dirty). As soon as I can, I'll try to knock some of the dirt off and take some pictures. Thanks for all the compliments, guys!
It's just cheap bed liner in a can... it's worthless. I'm gonna find me some grip tape somewhere and just put up with this until I get the truck painted.
In case you didnt know, they sell non skid "grip tape" in a spray can, krylon as well as others.
those steps are awesome, I hear you about the prices of steps.
Any chance you would fabricate some more? I would definitely be interested.
Well, I'm actually gonna redo the ones I have... basically, fabricate another set of steps. I think I'm gonna shove both steps towards the front of the truck about 6" and add 2" to each of the three runs that make of the step rungs. I'm also gonna go up a size for each of the pipes. Don't get me wrong, these work great but I think they need a little tweaking. They sure beat the stockers and nothing at all! I'll show pictures of what I'm talking about as far as positioning goes...
Actually, I wanted to do that, but I was using pipe that was laying around at the shop and I couldn't find any pipe long enough. But I'm gonna put a flatbed on the truck one of these days and that third step wouldn't work with a flatbed so, I just made do with what I had. Now that I know I can actually make something decent, I might try to elaborate a bit more this next time. Even if I don't make another set for awhile, what I've got now still works great.
Alright, I've finally got some pictures... let me know what you think!
Here's the steps... sorry for the dirt:
Here's how I made the rungs... I cut two 22.5* cuts at each bend, bent the pipe, welded up the seams, then ground it smooth:
I utilized my stock step mounts... I only used two of the four and it's still more stout than the stock runners:
I used some 3-something-inch C-channel and some small metal plates to make the brackets... hopefully you can see where I welded the tabs to the C-channel so that the tubes would have something to mount to:
Here's the stock mounting holes... I even used the clip nuts that were on the truck:
And it looks like this when bolted up:
On the front brackets, I only used three bolts... it's just the way the holes were laid out for some reason. Here you can see where the steps fall in regards to the actual leg areas they "serve":
I went by the doors when I measured... it didn't occur to me that the floors weren't centered with the door openings. As for the front, I'd still like to move them forward, but not so they're in the center of the floor space. I think both would work out to about 6" farther forward for both rungs. The main tubes are about 68" long... the rungs are 6" on the short sides and 12" on the long side. The rungs are at around 40* from horizontal... I basically just took a torpedo level and laid it across the rung and the main tube and read 45* degrees off that. Since the edge of the main runner and the edge of the rung aren't on the same plane, it made for around 40* actual and that works out about right. I used 1" black iron for the rungs and some leftover 2" ID galvanized pipe for the main tube. The brackets are just some 3-something channel and some strap material... I can get dimensions for thoe if y'all want it. If I could redo the steps, I'd keep the brackets, just use 2.5" ID tube for the main runner and then some slightly larger steel for the rungs. I would also make the rungs 8" on the short sides and 14" on the long side.
