So, i am sitting in my dads driveway, idling the truck yesterday, when all of a sudden the truck starts chugging and sounding like it is realy rich. I quick throw in the SCT and load the data logger, and low and behold, the Short term fule trim 1 is stationary at 0.75, while STFT2 is slowly (moreso than I have noticed before) switching from 1.00 to 1.03. I have never seen them go below 0.93 before, so Obviously something is off. I also noticed that the Long term fuel trim 2 is at 1.05, and LTFT1 is holding at 1.00
A couple of quick revss seemed to get the STFT1 to start switching again. Do I have some bad O2 sensors? I don't want to drop $100 on new Motorcraft ones since I have like 5k miles on these, but if this is indicative of defective O2, than I will do it. Just don't have experince with these things.....

. Did a full tune up in September, Motorcraft plugs, plug boots w/ dielectric grease, new Bosch O2's, new fuel filter, cleaned the filter and re-oiled, cleaned maf, cleaned throttlebody and replaced pcv valve.
Yeah, about 5k ago, and in December all this started to realy snowball.
a local tuner/motorsports shop that I spoke with about my truck similar issues to yours, said when ever they have a problem with tuning, they check the o2 sensor and they are usually bosch. they switch them out it the problem goes away. I just ordered my motorcraft o2s to replace my bosch and whatever brand 6 month old ones. good luck!
just my take on them...I have used and still use them on all my vehicles and love them. They have saved me lots of money. Never payed to much attention to any other benefits but back in 99' when I got my first one is when I learned this trick. Never oil the filter on the engine side, just the outside (where the air enters). A goodwrench guy told me when I brought my tricked out 6.o in cause it had "problems"

I realy do dislike the oiled filters.... Interesting thought on the O2's Thanks guys!
Yeah, I have never oiled the inside of the filter, only the outside, and the amount of fuel that it wastes is enough to buy a new one every year as I am constantly chasing the dirty MAF deal. Maybe it is only my luck, but whatever..... I did have similar issues with my Silverado when I got an S&B cac for it, and my blown Cobra freaks out every once in a while too, all had/have oiled filters, and clening the maf seems to help.

If I had the same experiences with those oiled air- filters as you had , I would have changed them back to stock filter . Give a shot to see if your problem goes away without additional spending . If you go back to your paper filter , give your MAF a good cleaning with an MAF cleaner . Good luck .
I tried to put a stock filter in it to go to Glamis after I first got the truck, but the stupid Banks filter housing is smaller than the stock airbox. I guess they want you to use just their filter. I have looked for a stocker, but don't want to pay anything for it, I'm cheap........
I would check the bone yards and craigs list. Sometimes trying to make things better causes more problems-I would go back to stock. I have owned a lot of vehicles in my time and had few repairs but I ran mostly stock very few mods. Good luck.
Going back to stock is good advice. It allows you to establish a baseline of efficiency and performance. Then, when mods are added, it is easier to understand their effect. Troubleshooting is made easier as well.
I can't believe that these v10's are that sensative to the branding of parts used. Boggles the mind actually....
It's not that the V-10 is sensitive to the branding of parts. It's the cheap junk the manufactures are branding. I used to be a big complainer of what some critical parts(sensors, etc) cost at the dealer. Not any more! I learned I can install it once or install it again and again. For example, there is a good reason that a Throttle position Sensor for my 92' 351w is $77.00 at the dealer and $20.00 at Autozone(noisey). I installed mine yesterday, set the base Idle that the PO screwed with and got it running right. A friend of mine has installed his third one today from Autozone and the truck is still not running right.

Not necessarily related to the MPG issue here rather parts and their relative quality.......
I NEVER shop for parts based upon price alone with the exception of it being the exact same thing, ie OEM stuff. With the internet I can now buy from the local stealership OR various online Ford dealers comparing final prices once shipping is added. So far I've trimmed perhaps 20% off my cost of OEM parts which is significant since I already enjoy a 25% discount from list already.
When it comes to NAPA, Auto Zone or Advanced I demand USA built parts and simply won't accept less. I prefer to buy and install something once and know its dependable, doesn't affect performance and with proper maintainence will last a good long while. Heck yes some parts seem outrageously priced when compared to something cheaper but apart from the occasional manufacturing defect higher quality parts have always proven to be my best bet.
We've all got those horror stories of bargain prices but fortunately mine are retelling of those others have experienced-----those same guys who initially brag what a good deal they got on the cheap stuff.
I'm driving an '00 E250 5.4l gasser with 246K miles with a ton of original parts which tells me quite a lot about what comes from the stealerships.
This has been a fascinating thread about MPG since I'm looking for an E350 with a V10!
china-china-china-CRAP. Buy American when you can-sorry I had to get that out!
Thanks for sharing---and its a good thought to get out I'd say! Fact is I absolutely refuse to buy anything from China which is the main reason I avoid WalMart---they're the #1 distributor of crap from China and really don't have that big a price advantage over anyone else even if they accidently sell something American made.
Not to get too far off on a political rant but its ironic and terribly sad the very people flocking to WalMart are those who have been and will continue to be affected by the hemorrhaging of jobs outsourced to China, namely our quickly disappearing middle class. Everyone crying how there are fewer and fewer jobs in the USA could do their little bit and buy American.
Okay that rant is over...........sorry for the interruption!
