i currently have the v10 with 36x15.50 tires and 373 gears. i lost 2 or 3 mpg when i put the lift and tires on i was wondering if regearing could bring me back up to those mpg thanks
Going to 36s would certainly affect the power and a gear change from 373 would be warranted for that at least. Not sure about the mileage but a possibility since the motor would be working harder, but you have to also remember that you put it up in the wind further too. I just put on a 4" lift and am at 33 tires and debating larger and will definately change the gears if I go any larger. The tuner was the best mod for me so far though. It unleashed the beast and improved the mileage. Check out Mike at 5Star if you don't have one.
No, you will not. Tires of that weight take a lot of power to accelerate. Tires of that size have a lot of aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. Lifts increase aerodynamic drag. All of those are mpg killers.
Going to 4.56 or 4.88 will get back some of your accleration ability and maybe 1/2 mpg.
Dont regear will get worse mpg and 373 is OK with v10 and them tires,ya can save the money...cuz yer gona need it as u will be going through front unit hubs every 20k with them hunks of rubber
Dont regear will get worse mpg and 373 is OK with v10 and them tires.
Wrong on both parts. The 3.73s suck with the stock 31.5" tires so larger 36" diameter tires are WAY worse. The mpg difference in stock form between 3.73s and 4.30s is negledgable. All those 3.73 gears gears are doing with those 36" tires is causing the transmission to hunt more and increasing the engine load. Hunting between gears all the time and driving with the TQ unlocked for long periods of time kills mpg.
To the OP you need to regear with those tires. You will gain performance and the transmission will thank you for the steeper gears. As for mpg you may pick up some with the swap it depends on your driving conditions. The 5 Star tuner will help with the performance but don't expect a mpg increase from it. The tuner will not make up for the poor gearing that you currently have with those 36s.
You will gain 1/2 mpg if ur lucky with a tuner, however with a intake, free up the exhaust, with the tuner will give ya 18-25hp...depending on what stuff ya buy and who tunes it.
My truck has 33s with a 5.4 and 373 gears....im verry happy with it. The v10 has 15% mor torque then the v8, 36" tires are 10% larger diameter then 33s......ergo your truck will feel and have over all 5% better performance then my truck, and like i said im verry happy with my trucks performance.
so you think regearing could help mpg if i drive it right
Did you correct the speedo, odometer and etc for the larger tires? If not both will be off by a considerable amount thus not giving you accurate numbers.
IMO regearing with those tires is must regardless of what effect it has on mpg.
and no i did not reset the speedometer. it reads 50 or 51 when im going 55 its off by 4. would this make the mpg appear worse than it really is on the screen?
You can throw any bolt on performance parts on the truck (minus a turbo or SC) and it will not come close to making up for the loss caused by the large tires. Without the proper tune an aftermarket intake can do more harm than good.
