got My 54 working for her keep ,and as I was backing up I can hear a clicking noise from under neath ..I have jacked up each wheel and spun it forward and back with no noise ..the drive line is all working well nothing loose that i can see I don't want bugger up anything it moves forward fine just makes noise in reverse a ratchiting clicking...and the front drive shaft is off so it's not the 4 by working ..what the heck am I missing???
Going out on a limb, but does this have the compensator transfer case? Your dash plaque would tell you. If so, it may be coming from there. I believe this is normal. Has it always done it??
People with more than book knowledge may correct me.
well she has been on the road for a few week's and I have tried not to push too hard..after getting the exhaust fixed all her groan's and creeking as we wander down the road I am chasing sounds and fixing what I can..yes it has a compinsating /positive drive ..where should it be?? I have it out of 4X4and the front shaft off, my big fear is breaking something the p/owner is n't avaliable to ask...so I try not to have to back up to often..
read the page..moved the 2nd lever to the proper position...no more clicking...I need more pictures!!!!so do you guy's work your trucks ..or weekend therapy??
pulled the leaver back ,I think.. as there are 4 to play with ..I figgered out the trans ..that was simple .. and the emergency brake..the button on top gave that one away..I didn't want to pull the wrong thing ..at least right away..and as it moves and stops..it wasn't till it was quiet with the muffler fixed i noticed the click..and before I shifted something and broke it.. I thought I better ask someone that may already have figgered it out..and reading the manual ..well I tend to skim over a few times before it sinks in
OK took it out .. it was ..in the forward position was pulled back ..that is when It clicks.. so forward no clicking.. I'm learning..slow but learning..
Forward should mean the front axle is engaged. Even though your front drive shaft isn't connected, the transfer case thinks it is. Pulled back is "Compensating" or, as said on my badge, "Rear Wheel Drive Only". As I mentioned above, the clicking sound is described on page 14 of the manual. The compensator function is described fully on pages 19, 20, and 21.
I think too it's good to mention that on Ken's truck both control levers are probably to the right of the gear shift and parking brake levers. In '53 MH added an additional linkage bar that relocated the main transfer case control lever from between the driver's legs and positioned it next to the hi/low range control lever. I have this linkage assembly in my parts bin from the '53 F-250 I parted. Stu
Ken, glad to hear you are getting it figured out. and glad to hear you are driving the old beast. i have yet to drive mine, maybe this will be the year. i might be wrong about this, but i would think you really only need to be worried about really big and loud ugly noises. these things are so over built for a light duty truck that i think your weekend driving is like a walk in the park for that old girl.
well that would make it easier to understand .mine is different..I'm gonna learn the posting pictures soon..I hope ..I got worried with the noise,,and thought I better ask..now sitting reading the manuel..I'm still wondering..after I get the parts in the front end..and better tires ..and ball joint's has a bad wobble at 40mph....it's still fun..
Your badge? Does it say "Compensating" instead of "Rear Wheel Drive Only"? If so, that shouldn't matter. What matters is whether you are trying to drive with the transfer case engaged or disengaged. Having the lever forward, in either instance, would be engaged and having it back would be disengaged. The clicking (to my mind) should just be the compensating function doing its job, but that's where Chuck's input would be helpful.
Or are your levers located differently than I described? It would be good if you could post pictures since your truck isn't exactly like ours. Logically the transfer case and linkage in your truck should be the same as in F-250 MHs. But without having the exact manual for your truck we can't say that with certainty. Stu
sorry ...to many irons in the fire ,and I keep forgetting to start at the begining of my thought's..the badge on my truck is different..the leavers are all towards the passenger side..mine say's positive --compensating...the badges are a bit crusty ..I have been avoiding cleaning then for fear of destroying them..and honestly just had a small panic when I could hear the clicking ,and not being sure of a heck of a lot with this truck ,didn't want to lockup something while playing and destroy something I could not replace...and I have learned small noise's become loud expensive noises...I am trying to post pictures .and read my manuel ..but work keeps getting in the way..
The clicking noise is the compensator doing it's job of ratcheting. It's explained in the manual, and it is illustrated as well. When you rebuild the transfer case, leave it out of there, and you won't have to worry about the clicking noise anymore. And you will have part time 4WD, so you won't power the front axle until you need it.
