Wheel Bearings?

I have an 04 PSD CC 4x4 - 112k miles.

The truck has developed a out of balance while driving. It is completely random. It doesnt happen at a certain speed, or when turning a certain direction. I had my tire shop pull the tires and check the balance and rotate them. They are a couple of years old, so I wanted to make sure it wasnt a broken steel belt.

They inspected the hub assemblies while they had them off and said there was some play in the right front wheel bearing. It was late and they didnt have time to change it that day (friday afternoon). So I took it to them yesterday morning and was going to have them go ahead and change both sides, I think its 100k deal.

So my truck sat there all day and they didnt do anything to it. They said they were 'covered up' and that it would be a couple of days. Which kinda got under my skin a little.

I did a tech search and came up empty. I found stuff on the 4x4 hub assembly, but nothing on the wheel bearing itself. I'm not afraid of turning wrenches or getting dirty, I was just thinking it may be more than I want to get into.

Has anyone done this before, or is there a write up somewhere that I may just be searching for the wrong thing?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think the hub is serviceable on a 4x4 I thought you have to change the hub to replace the wheel bearing. I could be wrong I don't have a 4x4.

These trucks have unit bearings on them, which means that the bearings themselves are not serviceable. You have to replace the entire hub assembly. Search for 'unit bearings' in the forum and you should come up with some good info.

They are hub assemblies, you can not service the wheel bearings. Nothing too complicated but it is recommended that you get the ESOF seal kit as well as those vacuum hubs like to stop working properly if you don't.

Here is a good link that outlines how to replace the ball joints. You have to remove the unit bearings to do this, so these instructions will help you.

The hubs are an assembly and come out after removing the snap ring, they stick a little bit but jiggle them and they will pull out.

I am assuming you are talking about the lockout hubs and not the hub/bearing assembly. If that is what you are talking about Dynatrac and one other company make a replacement kit that uses actual wheel bearings and WARN or Dynatrac lockout hubs which in my opinion is far superior to the Ford design but cost a pretty penny to buy.

I am also starting to buy parts for my front axle. I don't have an wobble or vibration but get a loose banging from either wheel anytime I hit a bump in the road.
I'm doing XRF ball joints while i'm in there.

I paid 670 bucks for mine at a jobber. Should have looked around, I think I got bent over. I've been dealing with these guys all my life and they always have the best prices, but holy crap...

I am in Alaska and paid $230 I think last summer per hub assembly. Sorry to hear about your intimate violation.

Is there a way to tell if I have coarse or fine threads without pulling it off?

If I recall correctly the thread pitch depended on the year model, I was wondering the same thing but my parts guys new it from looking in their computer and gave me the correct part.

I believe the thread pitch changed in 2005, the same time they changed the wheels from standard to metric lugs (which is why 2005+ wheels won't fit on 2004 and older trucks).
