Can anyone tell me about these guns? I've got a 5hp motor on c-list and a guy wants to trade for a 12gauge double barrel Mossberg, seeing as I got the motor for free I'm sure it's not a bad deal as long as it fires. I know a little about hand guns and rifles but to be honest I really don't know a whole lot about shotguns. Not sure if it's sideXside or over/under or any other details. Just wondering if these guns are any good or what the value might be on it.
I don't know much about their double barrels, but their single barrel shot guns are quality shots guns that are affordable. You can shoot a Mossberg 500 all day long. I have the 835 Ultra Mag myself. I'm sure their double barrels are great guns. Find out what the model number is, and the condition. Here is a pic off of Mossberg's web site of the one I have. Here is a link to their web site.
I don't believe for a minute that the barrels dented from normal handling.
It sells for about $400 new, so you can decide whether a free motor is worth more to you. If that's the model, which we don't know. Nothing wrong with this shotgun, but it is just a low end O/U. Imported from Turkey. Not American made.
Mossberg is the AMC of firearms...........I would stay away from anything but their tried and true, pump shotguns.
Mossberg might not be your first choice in shotguns (nor mine), but why stay away? Their O/U is made by Khan, one of the oldest gunmakers in existence. Certainly not an unsafe shotgun, and it is pretty hard to throw a 5HP motor and bring down a Dove.
On the other hand, a Mossberg makes a poor boat anchor.
I suppose seeing the prices of Ruger red label O/Us, Browning Citori's and Winchester mod 101 O/Us, the Mossberg would be a cheap way into O/Us if thats your thing.
And if its a good 5hp outboard motor we are talking about, no way I would trade........shotguns aren't much good for getting you out on the lake where the fish are.
I have not shot one of Mossburgs O&U guns.IMO my 835 is as good of a pump shotgun as I have ever used. It has good patterns with every load I've used in it. I dropped it during a duck hunt & filled it full of mud. I ran a stick through the barrel & washed it out in the lake. It went right back to firing. I doubt my Browning Gold would do the same. Its my main hunting shotgun & I own about 20 more expensive shotguns. I'm sure the O&U they make is a good buy
