I have a dilema that you all can propbably help with. The PO I bought my truck from told me it was a 1978 with a 390 swapped into it. Now when I did some VIN decoding it appears to be the 1979 F150 that originally came with the 400. I am unsure hjow to tell just by looking if I have the 400 or 390 but need to know before I buy parts. Any advice would be appreciated.
A few of easy ways: count the valve cover bolts, 360-390 has 5 per head (3 on top, 2 on bottom), 351M-400 have 8 per head, (4 each, top & bottom).
Or look at the fuel pump, 360-390 has 2 horizontal mounting bolts, bolted to aluminum timing cover, 351M-400 has 2 vertical bolts, directly to block, has flat steel timing cover.
Look at the oil filter, 351M-400 screws directly onto the block, 360-390 has an aluminum oil filter adapter between the block & oil filter.
Look at the distributor, 360-390 goes thru the intake manifold, 351M-400 fits into the block, ahead of the intake manifold.
Check water pump, 360-390 water pump is held on with 4 bolts, 2 per side, and there is a short piece of 5/8" heater hose between the water pump & intake manifold, plus the pump sticks out in front of the aluminum timing cover, on a 351M-400, the water pump is held on with many more bolts, directly to the timing cover.
One of these just has to help you decide what you have.
It appears that I have the 400. I am seriously wondering about whether there was a rebuild or not. I know she starts right up everytime and runs like a champ. I thank you all for all the tiips. I have been out of the auto game for a few years and this is my first old Ford so still on a learning curve.
