4.9 skipping

I took my 4.9 on a road trip yesterday and got about 20 miles from my house when it started to sputter like it was lacking spark or fuel. I went to an auto parts store and bought a fuel filter, spark plugs, and wires. I unclipped the engine side of the fuel filter and pulled it off and it had quite a bit of fuel pressure built up. I finished then took off and had to stop at the next exit to change the plugs because it hadn't fixed the problem. When I took off again everything seemed perfect and then it started again but only about 1/10 as bad. I'm going to check the dist. cap today. hopefully I find an answer there but if not I'll be needing some advise

The plugs looked as if its lean

You've got the spark plug wires, replace them the distributor cap and the rotor. Then you'll have an ignition tune up and can go from there if necessary.
