are there different c4 tranny's? I have a 77 150 with a c4 and pulled what I thought to be a c4 from a 80 model car. each has 11 pan bolts, removable bell housings, pumps and shafts appear to be the same. my bell housing bolts up differently though. mine bolts to the case, the one from the car bolts to the pump. only differnece I have noticed other than bell housing is that the dip stick tube on mine is in the pan, the tranny from the car has the dipstick in the housing. are there adapters that will make these interchange? any info would be great.
When I had my 77 150 302 C4 the tranny went out. I carried it to a shop I had used for years. When I picked it up he said it had a T bird tranny in it so he built me a truck tranny that he had to go back in it. It's been a good many years but I think he said it was a little heftier than the cars, I'm sure you will get a better answer but I did remember this. Steve
If you're interested in using the car transmission in your truck the first thing you need to consider is whether you can find a bell housing with the same bolt pattern (end that attaches to the engine) that also will work with your "bolts to pump" style transmission. The dipstick is negligible....just use the dipstick that came with the car transmission. I know various versions of C4's from trucks are interchangeable....not sure the same is true from car to truck. One other thing to consider...a car transmission is purposely designed to handle less than a truck transmission. It's worth considering when you're hauling a truck size load with a car sized transmission.
I have the same type of C4 transmission-the body of trans is longer, uses a shorter bell housing. Use 24 spline torque converter with 157 flex plate. A big visual difference is that the fill tube / dip stick is in the pan. I NEED THE PAN AND FILL TUBE with Dip Stick. No location in case for tube/stick. From what I could find they were used from late '68 to mid 70's in some F-100's, vans, full size cars and Broncos. Have a heavier output shaft and yoke with additional clutches.
