any ideas on either building or buying a y pipe to replace that crappy ford factory one? i would like a 2 into 1 so i can buy an aftermarket cat and put a new exhaust on it.

Magnaflow makes a factory fit replacement y-pipe with converter:

MagnaFlow 93307 - MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converters - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Bassani also makes a y-pipe for our trucks as well. It is very pricey, it used to come in an offroad version and one with a high flow converter. IIRC the base part number is 501502. If you are using factory manifolds you will need adapters for the manifold connectors. The y-pipe is 3" after the downpipes from the manifolds/shortie headers. Nice piece, but it is not cheap.

Maremont and Walker both make factory replacement pipies as well.

The 5.0 version won't fit a 5.8 but there are 5.8 versions too.

Sorry about that, I would have sworn yours was a 5.0L engine. My apologies, I think I need my eyes checked....doh!!

The Bassani pipe is part number 581502. I used a Bassani 58150B2 y-pipe on my '92 F350 4x4. It is designed for a Bronco. but fits like a glove. I never did figure out what is the difference between the 581502 and 58150B2.

Maremont and Walker both make factory style replacements for the 5.8 as well. Magnaflow has a version to fit a 5.8L: MagnaFlow 93312

I built my own mandrel y with a few parts from summit....about $80....and good day of fitting and welding. Wow...what a difference. I purchased 2 2.5" u-bends, a magnaflow merge collector and one stick of 4 foot 2.5 pipe. No cats.

I do not think the Magnaflow 93312 is a direct fit on a '96. You truck should use 3 O2 sensors IIRC. One in each down pipe and a third behind the converter. With a few mods such as adding some bungs for O2 sensors in the right spot it could work.

when i do my exasut real soon im just gonna cut the cat off its a di/so cat. so im gonna cut the cat off and buy a 'y pipe" so i can run a si/so magnaflow universal cat, then into a muffler ( havnt decided brand yet ) and exit b4 rear tire. i have one o2 right before the cat in one of the pipes so i shouldnt have any trouble. i saw a magnaflow "y pipe" was 9" long for like $23. think ill pop on that. would i run into any problems? also wile at a local junkyard i for an 02 gt stang with a slp loudmouth cat back on it. could i grab that muffler and put on my truck?

Driver side of the Y has a over sheild if this is for the 5.8. its not a bigger pipe. Its all 2.25 pipe with 2.50 female flair spin flanges. If this is for "black betty". I have no clue on the 5.0 ...
