Speedo dancing

So my speedo is dancing, not always, more so when cold and it's pretty darn cold out here in Indiana. Is this cable or speedo? Also, have seen cables on ePay, seems there's different lengths? I have a 71, 390, C6, anyone know what length cable I need?

Mine does it too, gets worse as the temp gets lower. I found gear oil in the cable end at the speedo, so I'd bet yours probably has some in it too. That or it's bone dry. There's a seal in the trans to stop oil from going up the speedo cable. After that, and a new cable, you should be good. I dont know the length though.

Usually this is caused by either the speedo gear being worn or more likely that the speedo cable is dry. If the speedo works then it shouldn't need to be replaced, just take the cable assembly out of the truck, pull the inner cable out of the tube and lube it up with some powdered graphite. While it's out check the drive dear to make sure it isn't worn, no broken teeth, etc. and that the cable itself hasn't been damaged by anything (exhaust heat, pinched, cracked, etc.)
