Auto Locking Hub Issues
Friend has an 01 F350 diesel 4x4 with auto locking hubs that can also be locked in manually at the hub. They will not lock in from the dash switch, but work fine when manually put in. The light on the switch shows they are engaged but not going in. Anyone have this issue before, and are there any procedures that can be checked without returning to the dealer? Thanks !

First, the light on the switch does not tell you the hubs are locked or unlocked. The light tells you the transfer case is engaged. Sounds like your friend has a vacuum leak. Look at the vacuum lines that go to the hubs to be sure there is no cracks, holes in the line. Does the fan in the truck start blowing out the defrost when the 4x4 switch is turned?

I have the same issue with my truck. I replaced the vacuum lines from the hubs to the frame but it didnt seem to help. Maybe i need to check the rest of the lines. What does it mean if the fan starts blown out the defrost when u switch the 4x4 on?

Vacuum is what locks and unlocks front hubs. If you switch to 4x4 and you can only get defrost then that is usually a vacuum leak some where. Put a gauge on line at the hub and shift it in and out of 4x4, could be there is not enough vacuum to change hubs. If that checks out maybe its time to clean and grease the locking hubs.
