Electrical Issues
Got a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge model, 3.0L V-6, 5-speed manual transmission, with some electrical issues.
Open the door, the dome light comes on, put the key in the ignition with the open and the door chime starts dinging. Sounds good?
Next, turn the key and all power cuts out. Nothing. No light, no chime, no headlights. Disconnect and reconnect the battery cables (dome light/door chime work again)... but, there is a steady ticking sound coming from under the dash -- I believe it's coming from a silver-looking object that looks very similar to some old fuel filters. Now power to start the truck, no headlights...
I haven't yet pulled the codes, but I wanted to drop this into the board to see if anyone has come across a similar issue. (I had a really big hammer within reach and, with my Muppet-like anger , I thought it best to step away before I caused some dents...) I'll try to pull some codes this evening.
Thanks!
Reconnected the battery and I've got nothing. No door chime, no interior light, no engine compartment light, no headlights, no tail lights, no brake lights.
But, here's what happens when I use the key in the ignition switch:
Insert key: Nothing
Turn to ACC: Nothing
Turn to start: Nothing
Turn back to ACC: A weak ding (chime to let you know the key is in); and then the electrical clicking sound coming from under the dash (a slight application of the brake pedal stops the clicking)
Remove key: Intermittent clicking from under the dash, then silent for a few moments. Then the regular clicking comes back.
Disconnected the battery again to stop whatever electrical issue is going on.
Anyone got any thoughts on what's happening under the dash?
As a side question: Does disconnecting the battery affect the storage of codes? Will a code reader work if the battery is not connected?
Heading off now in the '94 Ranger (old reliable...) to find a code reader.
