Hi, 98 F150 401 codes. New on here, been lurking for a bit. Got my explorer to pass smog by going on this site, just the egr pressure valve $30 part. Now my 98 F150 8 cyl 4.6 is giving me trouble passing. Getting the 401 codes and finally decided to take off the Egr manifold/ throttle body per the large thread on here regarding said problem. etc. I was expecting to find it to be full of carbon but it was surprisingly very clean. Like some others I replaced the $50 DPFE prior to this step but it did not fix it. Lucky me , the short EGR bolt (left) broke off , so now have to try to remove it. About a 1/4 " sticking out, hope I can grab and twist it out without having to easy out etc. Any way, Now what? Egr valve is good according to a shop. He first got a reading hooking up a vac guage and then after he could not?? Said likekly the EGR solenoid, bought it, $33 , not installed yet. He said the valve worked and was surprised that all of a sudden it did not, thus telling me the solenoid may need replaced. HAve not put that on yet, just wanted to do the carbon cleaning. Now since that looks fine, I'm at a loss what to do? Any Ideas/suggestions?

Reason: Problem not listed in title (billc)
Going to give you the best web address I've seen for testing egr components. I just dealt with this problem. Make sure that you have the vacuum lines on the dpfe in the correct position. The larger tube goes on the hi side of the down tube. Usually that's nearest the firewall or the collector. If you have part time egr vacuum then that's your problem. This url will walk you through all the steps to check the system with great pic's
and instructions. Good Luck Part 1 -How to Test the Ford EGR Valve and DPFE Sensor
