Angry oil problem

I rebuilt an 86 302 and put it in my 72 f100. I fired it up this weekend and it sounds greaaaaaaaaat, but it is blowing oil out of both headers, about a quart. I am thinking that it is in the intake someware to get into both headers. Any ideas would help.

oil problem

Are you sure all the rings are installed correctly? The guy who built the engine for my friend's race car put the wrong oil rings in the motor (he had 2 sets) and it blew lots of oil out of the exhaust. He changed the oil rings to the ones he was planning on putting in there in the first place, and it has been fine since. I know you hate to hear this after putting it in, but this sounds like a possibility. I would, however, check the intake manifold first to make sure it's not something relatively simple such as a sucked in manifold gasket. But that is an awful lot of oil to be coming out of the exhaust.

This is what I have come up with.
I removed the upper plenum from the lower and had about a quart of oil in it, real messy.
I have come to the conculsion that the PCV system changed in 86, changing an oil passage in the block. I think that my problem is that I have an 84 block and using 86 injection system. The pcv on the later is located in the intake manifold on earlier they were in a valve cover. My problem is that there is an oil passage that is pumping oil to the baffle for the pcv, I think the pcv is sucking up this oil and filling the chambers. Do you know if there was a change in the 302 block in 1986?

I'm not sure about the changes in the engine between years, but that sounds like a definite possibility, and would be far easier to correct than changing rings. Can you disconnect the PCV system? If you could, that would probably be a good indicator as to whether or not that's the problem.

Dude! if the pcv thing doesn't pan out, run a leak down test to be sure its your rings before puling the motor! Another possibility is cracked valve stem seals, worn valve guides, if the heads are new or rebuilt the valve guide /seals should be fine, also intake mounting gasket could be a issue if the heads have been milled several times, a poor running engine will likely result from bad sealing. just some more ideas

How long did you run it.
I had to run mine for about 30 minutes before it stopped blowing lots of oil. Runs fine now.
