I have a '67 F100. Right now it has an '83 mustang 302 and a C4. I am about to have the c4 rebuilt but was thinking about an AOD conversion. What all would I need to do to make an 88 mustang AOD fit? Thanks.
I'm not an auto trany guy but I do know several of my mustang friends hate AOD's. We went threw 3 befor putting a truck auto in there. Granted it was a turbo 5.0 but still. He put an old truck trany in there. I'm not shure an AOD will hold up to the weight of a truck.
AOD's come stock in a lot of trucks from 80 on up to the 90's, right?
I put an AOD out of an '85 f150 in my '71. You'll need to modify the trans crossmember or drill new holes in the frame. I just elongated the existing holes in the crossmember.
You may double check your exhaust components - my headers are a tight fit around the AOD's wider dimension.
I had to shorten my driveshaft a little. A mustang has the shorter AOD though so you may come out better than me on that.
If you are running a carb on the 5.0, you might look into Lokars TV cable set up. I used it but changed a few things - I wonder if it would have been better to use the stock one though.
Mine has only seen a few hundred miles since I put it together. But so far so good! Personally the only time I've seen these fail is when the bushing goes bad in the throttle body and allows the TV cable to fall out. This = toast.
Do some research, I believe there is a different output, one from a later truck would be better. The tv cable installed correctly is very important. With the 302 you will need a 3.50 rear ratio to benefit from the OD.
Plus, the newer they are the better. The best ones were in the 92-93 trucks. Wide overdrive band, and a bigger converter lockup servo, just to name the 2 important ones.
