swapping gears

thanks to all that give their opinion, that's what I'm asking for.

I've got an F150, 4.6, auto with the 3.08 rear end (believe that's right)and 255 tires. I've got a great opportunity to get a 20ft, 3500 # travel trailer. I know the truck will pull it down here in the flatlands, but I really want to take it up into the Rockies this summer. I don't drive like a mad man, and doing 40 or 45mph up a mountain would be fine with me.

will a gear change benefit the truck and be worth the cost?
any other ideas?

thanks again.

Find some 3.55 gears. They will pull 3500 lbs fine. Your cheapest option might be to find a axle in a junk yard with the gears in it and swap the entire thing out. A gear swap from a shop can cost around $800.

If you go to a junk yard, you might be able to find a decent axle from a 4x4 with a 3.55LS or even a 3.73 for a couple hundred bucks. 4 ubolts, and reconect some brake lines and your in buisness.

Make sure you look at 8.8 axles if you go this route. The 9.75 axle requires a different driveshaft.
