Front Shocks

Am I just not looking in the right places but nobody here in town has the front shocks for the 4wd version of the 84 6.9l. I am having issues and my suspension is starting to feel really....really...well...i feel darn near every bump.

Could be depressed leaf pack or worn out shocks. Do you bounce up and down after the bump?

I run these

I feel just about every bump too - thats probably a good thing. You are supposed to feel every bump empty so when you're towing 10K or have 3K in the back, the suspension is strong enough to handle the load.

did someone add a front leaf? 2 are stock.3 ride HARD.
how are your ball joints?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEYm-5SGigY

well,i was looking for a better one lol.
to test them accurately, use a pry bar under the tire and lift up and let down.you could see that one was bad using his weight, but thats because it was let go way to long.bad ball joints will bang on the bumps and could be your trouble.of course yeah, shocks are usually the first things to test when experiencing a harsh ride.
its very dangerous to let ball joints go.these are checked with state safety inspections every year here in Maine.

If you bounce up and down more than usual, your shocks could be worn. A shock is hard to depress and hard to expand so that when you hit a bump the spring absorbs the shock and the shock controls the spring. It could be that or what XLT said.

Hey I like my 3 front springs
I have two in the front and three in the rear. Is that how many I should have? It seems like a 3/4 ton should have more. I want more in the rear for greater payload. I haul hay in the back and I would like to put a ton on there without having to worry about breaking the leafs.

2 in the front sounds normal but you should have 5 in the back (unless that was a 87-94 thing). 3 in the back sounds low to me, but that could be cause I have 8 in the back for heavier loads.

Try 7 leaf main springs, 5 leaf overloads.

Then put 9700 pounds on the dump bed.

As for the front, how much clearance between the bump stop and the rubber bumper on the front axle?

If you say 3/4 to 1 inch, get new front shackles.
The upper shackle bushing is shot.

It's up inside the frame, the only way to see it is pull it apart.

Dave beat me to it but agreed check your leaf spring and shackle bushings. If they are shot the truck will sit lower to the bump stop and the leaf springs could be riding on the metal sleeve, metal on metal.

Even if the rubber bumpers are still there, when the stop hits the rubber bump stop it slams kinda hard.

Everyone told me I was crazy putting a 7 ton hoist on a 250.
Course everyone that see's me hauling also tells me I am crazy.

It has been getting the job done for 25 years now.
