Engine cutting out
Recently installed a rebuilt long block, 240-6. Couldn't get spark from the coil despite new points, condensor, cap and wires. Had primary power thru points. Pulled distributor and coil from parts truck, still no spark. Bought new coil, started up great, but wanted to cut out, (causing truck to "buck"), double & triple checked valves which i should be able to do as I had to set valves on my panhead and shovelhead harleys for years with no problem. Rebuilt carb, still cutting out. Started replacing sparkplugs, which were new, one at a time. During a test run I noticed temp guage was at zero although truck was fully warmed up. Then noticed that the oil pressure was not showing either. Turned off truck and coasted then turned ignition back on and both gauges came back. Tried to "hot wire the ignition to isolate the ignition switch but it ran worse than ever, couldn't even drive away in it. Guessing that not having a resistance wire to the coil might be the reason. I'm no great mechanic but have done most of my own wrenching for almost 40 years now and this is driving me crazy, any ideas?
