I'm thinking that I may just end up ordering a new 2011 and had a question on the E locker. Looks like it's about $1400 and I'm not sure it's anything I'd ever use. I don't go off road other than fire roads, campgrounds and the occasional field where 4WD has always provided all the traction I've ever needed. So...what's the benefit of E lock if you have 4WD and don't really go off road?
There has been some confusion about the pricing of limited slip and ELD. IIRC, my window sticker for the E locker was about $350. I do like mine, a lot. I have pulled my 13000 pound Big Horn up a hill out of a swampy campsite without using 4wd. I also would recommend looking at the videos from the "Ohio Meet". It was raining and the road was slippery. Previous runs were never tried with 2 wd. My accomplice's were doubtful when I hooked it up. The video speaks for itself. Linked below

I hear ya...but it seems to me if I have 4WD then I don't need a locker, no? Maybe I don't understand the purpose of the locker?
I ordered it. I tow as well. It was $390.00 retail. If you want to get moving quickly on wet roads, it would be a great help. I think I read on the ford site somewhere it disconnects automatically when over 50 mph or when in a really hard corner at slow speed. The old limited slip did not seem to work right when I needed it most. & 4 wheel drive binds on dry surfaces (gravel, not pavement)even on gentle turns so that is not always a good option.
I use 4x4 before I lock the rear diff but it sure is a cool addition to 4x4.
I can't say I've been in a situation where I would have been stuck without it but it does help. Anyways, I also vote for it. If you are thinking about it, get it.
mine was only like a $300 option that is after buying the truck for invoice price. for that little to me its worth it. with that said in ice or snow I can barely tell I have it on or not. yesterday I was on a snow packed road going up hill pulling a 6k trailer, the trailer has about 700# of ball weight so its putting some serious weight on the back of the truck and squats my f250 pretty good. I experimented in 2wd turning it on and off, I could barely and I mean barely tell when it was on, however turning on 4wd was like night and day difference activating the front tires.
it probably will work great in other situations just not ice and snow.
My experience is that when both rear wheels have little traction, the E-locker does not help much (e.g. snow and ice). It forces both tires to spin and the back end starts sliding one way or another.
When you are off road where one tire has great traction and the other does not, this is when the locker really shines. It is also really good in sand when you need a lot of revs and to make sure maximum power is going to both wheels. I've heard it is useful in grassy/muddy situations like Rickatic described. You can force both rear wheels to cut through the slippery stuff down to the drier, harder soils.
I like it - Pulling trailers in a dry off road environment up hills & unlevel either with or with-out 4x4... In serious mud we might be punching it & so the tires might spin and turn it off.. But for creepy crawling loaded it works well where otherwise you would have one tire slip...
Thanks for the explanations of where you might use it. I can't think of one time in the last 7 years where I would have used this instead of 4WD so I think I'll pass on this and spend the $300 on a nice tonneau cover.
OK..here's where I'm confused. The 250 CC 6.75' bed comes with the 3.31 non-limited slip axle. If I switch to the 3.55 it adds $1375. Why is it $1400 for the different gears? Is it adding something else that it isn't telling me?
It has to be adding a package of some sort when you make that choice. I mentioned earlier that there was some confusion over this. I do not remember what we figured out 6 months ago though. I looked at my window sticker earlier. The retail is $390 on the sticker. I have the Lariat package with 20 inch rubber and mandatory 3.55 gears. That may be the difference.

OK...adding the 3.55 does add the 20" wheels and $985. What's confusing is if you go in to exterior and switch the wheels to the 18" wheels is reduces the price $1250 and doesn't give any explanation. Weird.
