That normally indicates looseness somewhere. A single knocking sound?

I first heard it when i would let off the gas when exceleration. The knock or tapping is very uniform. to me it sounds like a rod knock? something like diesel knock

How has it been maintained? The 2.3 cannot tolerate lack of maintance and will spin rod bearings. When that happens the piston hits the cylinder head. The rods dont have any locks for the bearings so the only thing keeping them from spinning is interference fit. Take the oil filter off and see if any metal is in it.

Not maintained well... What can be done if this is the case? How much can it cost?

How much do you have? You can get a used engine or a re-manufactured short or long block or have yours repaired. A used engine, depending on age and mileage, can run from a few hundred dollars to near a thousand. A re-manufactured will cost more as more new parts are used in the assembly, and they guarantee their product for more than a short time. A short block does not include the cylinder head, and you are expected to use the old one. A long block includes the cylinder head.
The labor cost for the replacement is just about the same for used or re-manufactured, unless the head needs to be transferred or re-worked. Figure a full days labor spent removing and installing. If you know wrenches and have access to a hoist, you can possibly do the R&R yourself.
