hydroboost setup questions

I picked up a hydroboost and master cylinder with lines and fittings for $20. My 93 currently does not have hydroboost obviously, so I want to know what else I need to run the setup. I also got all the hardware that mounts to the eyelet on the brake pedal just in case.

What was the hydraboost on originally?

The only other thing you need is a block off cap for the vacuum tree and a reservoir for the power steering pump that has two return ports.

booster, master cylinder with the push rod, spring and star retainer between the two. you need 2 pressure lines, from pump to booster, then booster to box. then you need a low pressure return line from the top of the booster to the return on the pump. you SHOULD put a fluid cooler on that line before it goes to the pump. also, you need either a T so you can cut and splice the return line from your power steering box to the pump OR get a new power steering pump tank with the nipple on the neck thats built specifically for the hydroboost setup.

the setup was off a 97 f-superduty. Also, I can ge the ps pump off the same truck but it has play in and out so im pretty sure its shot. Could I remove the plastic part with the filler neck off the pump or is it all one piece?

The tank should be able to swap out.
There is an O ring that seals the tank to the pump housing.

My pump was getting a little weak, so I went with a new pump when I did my conversion.

I also pumped a couple quarts of ATF through the system before I took it apart so any metal or crud would not get into the hydraboost unit.

That is the sytem I used, bolt on fit on my 86.

I really need to do this swap...

Was it only the aluminum master cyl that needed the holes widened? Or will my 86 cast iron one need it too?

The master cylinder that was on the 97 F Superduty had rear disc brakes.
I was afraid to use that master cylinder, to much fluid to the rear wheel cylinders.

My 86 cast iron master cylinder bolted right on.

The hydraboost bolted right on the firewall.

No widening holes on anything.

I bought new hoses from Ford, pump to hydraboost unit, hydraboost unit to steering gear pressure hose, and return from hydraboost to pump reservoir return on the reservoir neck.
They also bolted right on.
I left the return from the steering box to the pump hose in place and just hooked it up to the new pump return.

you have to widen the aluminum ones only. its just a matter of side loading a strong bit thats choked up as much as possible. they have those side cutter bits that chew it up pretty quick. or you can get a smaller aluminum bit for a die grinder. the steel ones gum up too quick when using it for aluminum ones

I've never heard of Hydroboost, either I live in a cave or I'm having a brain fart.

It's a hydraulic brake booster. Instead of using vacuum to increase the power of the brakes it uses power steering fluid and the power steering pump.

The hydroboost unit is much more compact and many say the it greatly increases braking power.

what would i go looking for at the JY, when i called and asked they guy thought i was from the states or something haha. Really though, he had no idea what i was talking about. Is there a good year or can someone scope one at a jy and send it to me? I think as long as we stay away from the FPO, there wont be any problems shipping. Both of my last shipments made it no problems. anyone have eyes on a setup?

83-97 f-superduty (f450) is what you wanna look for.

The ones on the F superduty (450) from 83 to 97 bolt right on.

The ones for the 99 and up Super Duty take some modifications and you will also have some hose issues since they seem to use different fittings on the ends.

Those prices are what I paid at Ford, probably 7 or 8 years ago, and the parts numbers were for a 96 F-superduty when we looked them up on the computer.

I was able to get the tank with two return nipples on it so i should be good to go. Would it be bad to use the superduty MC since it had rear discs or does it not matter?
