I wrote a previous post about my new 2010 F150 having a "bump" or clunk type sound when I step on the gas from a stop. I found there is a TSB on just that problem which deals with the the joint of the two piece drive shaft.
Well, the dealer mechanic still says it's just "axle wind up" which he says is normal for a "raised truck." Keep in mind that this happens when in TWO wheel drive. My understanding of axle wind up is that when in 4 wheel drive and turning, the front drive shaft/wheels are trying to turn at a different RPM than the rear and if you are on dry pavement it will bind or as they call it, axle wind up. If the wheel doesn't hop and release the tension something else will give in the drive train.
So my question. Is this mechanic blowing sunshine up my skirt or does axle wind up happen in 2 wheel drive also when the front axle isn't even engaged?
Look up the term "axle wrap". Is your truck lifted? And if so, is it lifted with blocks or full leaf springs in the rear?
What your mechanic is referring to is axle wrap. What you are referring to is drivetrain bind when in 4wd. You guys are on different pages in a way. Axle wrap is common on lifted trucks with blocks especially. The axle is literally rotating from the torque and flexing the leafs and changing your pinion angle in the process. Google it...you'll find some info.
i think axel wind up is when your axel twists up. wich is common when u add blocks to the rear to raise it up. so it would happen in 2 wheel drive. the blocks make it easier to twist up. but i think there is a tsb about getting the driveshaft splines lubed up it its making a noise on takeoff.
Thanx for the reply... My truck is new and is stock. It hasn't been lifted. Do stock trucks still have axle wind up, or axle wrap? My Dodge Ram didn't.
Stock trucks can exhibit some wrap...usually not much though. My 06 doesn't seem to wrap but I'm not usually on it that hard from a dead stop. There are aftermarket solutions to your problem
My truck does it every time I step on the gas from a stop. Every single time. I baby this thing and start off slow and it still does it. Like I said, there's a TSB on that problem which deals with the 2 piece drive shaft. What is the aftermarket solution? Ford has a TSB with their solution.
My truck has axle hop if I accelerate to hard from a dead stop. I'm actually thinking about taking it to the dealer because a friend has the same 2010 f150 configuration as me but an XLT, and his doesn't do it at all.
