ok my truck is really hard to start if it drops below 25 degrees, the last couple nights its been 10 degrees and when i go to start it after its set for a few hours it will and die, do this for about 10 min then when i hit the key with the gas pedal pressed it will rev up then just cut off and die then it wil start to sputter then eventually start about 30 min of attempted starting. i am by no means an idiot when it comes to vehicles i can do anything from body work to rebuilding a motor. just at a loss as to what causes this, cause it fires right up as soon as you hit the key if its above 25.
Sounds like the choke is not closing, and/or the fast idle is not engaged. If it takes 30 minutes of coaxing to get it started, then it sounds like you're also creating a flooding condition while trying to start it. All it should take is one press of the pedal and a turn of the key to start a carbureted engine (this is to unbind the fast idle linkage and load the choke). If it's really cold out, it doesn't hurt to press the pedal twice to load the choke and wet the throat of the carburetor. Much more than that means there's a problem with the choke and/or fast idle linkage - and pressing the pedal more than 3 or 4 times will flood the engine. Then it's not starting for a completely different reason.
Without you identifying what engine you're working on, that's about all the help I can offer.
its a 300, temporarily. ive checked the choke and i is working, fast idle also works. all is in working condition, and it does it no matter how much gas is in it and ive also put water treatment in it. i dont pump it when i first start it i let it crank for a few seconds to get the oil pumping. then ill press it once and it will hit, then it will just keep hitting. what it seems like to me is it does this till it starts to warm up from this
