You know, it may be a simple shift point/gearing issue, rather than anything specifically wrong with the engines. Before we had "modular engines", anytime we had a spark knock or pinging problem, we first checked the timing (valve and ignition), then the gas. If all that checked out OK, we just didn't up shift so soon. Not enough gear, or rpm's will get you a lot of knock/ping. Just thinking out loud.

Your right. I had gone thru everything: timing adjustments, gas, fixed vacuum leaks, replaced most sensors which pinpoint tested bad, checked slack in the timing chain, even took a bore scope to check for carbon on top of the pistonspistons. Turns out it was the advance mechanism in the distributor all along...ain't that a b@$%h
