my question is i have a 05 f150 with 3in hbs leveling kit and i want to put 35s on it what size wheels do i want as far as back spacing and width. can you get away with them on stock wheels? I couldnt really find anything on here about exact wheel specs. thanks for your help
Your question is confusing. Are you asking about what size wheels, tires, or both? On stock wheels I would not go over 295/70's as they are just under 35" and less then 12" wide. Not much less but less and do not bulge much on the 8.5" wide wheels the 150's have. The wheels and backspacing can be whatever you want. Now when you change to a different wheel and tire combo you will have trimming to do on the front fender. How much yuo have to do will depend on the wheel and tires you choose.
I have 3inch front spacers and a rear lift on my 08, I went with BFG 285/65/..s on 8.5 inch rims with 25mm (almost an inch) so the back spacing is about 5.25 inches. This backspacing lets the tires out of the wheelwells just a little bit. They fit perfect with a slight rub only on the left side, only in reverse, and only at about half the turn of the steering wheel. The rub is on the black plastic fascia under the bumper. I just let it wear down till it didnt rub anymore. The rears in these trucks can fit 35s stock.
But as has been said you dont want to go crazy on the stock rims with tire size. Chances are your stock rims are 7.5 inches wide, unless its a harley davidson then they are 9 wide. Most tire shops are afraid of the bulge and tire bead holding the rim when you get close to 12 inch wide tires on 7.5 inch rims.
But as has been said, backspacing and tire size are up to you, it is going to come down to you have to ask yourself what 'look' am i going for and what am i willing to do to get there. I think we can better answer the question if we know a little more about what your trying to do. IE....do you want the wheels stuck way out or at flush with the wheelwell. Thats going to decide what wheels you can and cant use and then thatll decide what tires will and will not fit with or without some cutting and rubbing... Sometimes you have to find the wheel you like first and then find a tire to fit, sometimes its the other way around. I dont think your going to find a spec book on what will and wont work, your going to have to go on other's experiences. And im sure youll get some on here soon
srry i should have said the min backspacing for 35x12.50 tires to clear. And min wheel width, im not looking for anything crazy, looks like 5.25 or 5.50 backspacing should work with 8.5 in wide wheel.
My bad I should have said the fx4. My stock rims are 8.5.
The fx4 rims should be 7.5 in width as well unless they are 20s those are the 8.5s and I believe the harley trucks might be 9 but not sure about that one
here are some pics to show the 8.5 with a 35x12.50x17 tire. dont mind the dirt and salt its been a crapy winter with road salt
Hey not to change the subject at all, but I noticed you run your wheels in the winter salts and sand....?! I have a nice set of wheels that are machined like your vision wheels but am afraid to run them in the winter. so i run the OEM's. Have you noticed any pitting from the salt or any other ill effects to the wheels??
17's and 18's OEM wheels are 7.5 inches wide
20's OEM wheels are 8.5 inches wide
22's OEM wheels harley ed. are 9 inches wide
I wouldnt put 12 or 12.5 inch wide tires on anything less than 8.5 inch wide wheels as has been said by others. but 35 by 12 or 12.5s work great on 8.5 wide rims, which is what I run and they look similar to the picture posted above, you can see how my 35's by 12's on 20s on 8.5 wide rims look in my album, you can also see how the backspace of 5.25 inches looks there.

to be honest the brake dust seems to be harder on them than the salt. all in all they seem fine but they also are only one year old and i got them because i needed something to fit a big set of tires on for the winter/snow.( i got stuck last year in the snow and said f**k the stock size tires and they only cost like $320)
