I've got a '83 f150 with a 351w block , with 302 timing. Would it have a 302 crank and cam in it or can you have a 351 crank and 302 cam , would it work? My geuss if it has the 302 cam , would it "walk" and cause the distributor to get chewed?
When I got the truck the guy said it was performanced out but did'nt give the specs. It has been bored 60 over, with headers, Edelbrock Performer intake, got a Holley 2 bbl on it for now, with a Holley 750 cfm off to the side to put on it. The Cam sould have some numbers on it ?
You can stuff a 351W/302 H.O. firing order cam in a 302 and you can put a 302 cam in a 351W or 302 H.O. The engine doesn't care as long as you have the firing order matching the cam on the distributor cap. The crank has nothing to do with it. The cam will thrust the correct direction either way. Are you actually chewing up the distributor gear? If so, it's probably an oil pump problem. The previous owner probably thought it would be a wonderful idea to put a high volume pump in that "performanced out" motor. Small block Fords never had a problem with the oiling system and almost never need a high volume pump. They are hard on cam and distributor gears and oil pump drive shafts. Unless you are doing the roundy-round at the local dirt track on Saturday nights at 8,000 RPM, the stock pump will be just fine.
Thanx for the info, I'll go and change that out and hopefully it will not get me stranded on the side of the road again.
p.s.- what does the H.O stand for?
