Don't forget that the rear seat can be removed altogether, which makes for substantially more cubic volume of room where it is needed most... at the rear door opening end, where ingress and egress of large objects is best.... as opposed to toward the rear door forward hinge, because the folded up seat is still in the way of the optimum space and access in the back half of the crew cab.

I have found that with the seat removed, there is no need for the floor to be dead flat. Sometimes the small differences in floor heights offer some advantage in cargo compartmentalization... holding a box in place from sliding, as an example.

This photo wasn't taken to show the rear seat removed... it was taken to show the Ford accessory back wall storage trays. But it was the only photo I had handy showing the rear seat removed, revealing the cavernous, more useable space where the seat once was, and would remain, if a fold up seat where opted for.

We just purchased a 2008 F-450 which has the fold out metal tray. What actually is it's intention? I'm assuming a floor "mat" but it doesn't sit down flat to the floor so won't it end up breaking off or bending? Seems pretty hokey to me.

In going through the thread it looks like most have removed it and put in a storage box. I am considering the same. I am looking at the Weathertech continuous liner for the back seat floor. We will be carrying 4 dogs - medium to large, so I think the liner will serve us better. Plus I can pull it out to clean up if someone decides to toss their cookies. I can only hope it's on the floor! Then again I plan to buy waterproof seat cover for the back seat also.

Zoedogcbr,
Welcome to the club. My truck came with cargo boxes under the seat and I too have dogs, big dogs. I wanted an even surface for them to go back and forth with looking out the windows. If you take either the tray or the cargo boxes out, one you wont find any after market direct fit liners. Most I can suggest is get a F150 crew cab rear and then cut to fig. What I chose to do is swap with someone on one of these forums for my cargo box for there tray they took out. Even steven, cargo box worked better for them and a flat, even surface was better for my dogs. I got a large 1 inch memory foam matt that I stick in when I put the dogs in. They don't have as much room as they do in my wife's f150 crew cab. The f150 crew doors set back in the truck giving you a greater opening and clear/flat cargo or dog run. :-)

Hope that helps, Good luck.

RocketKatchR I can see that having the seat up and the whole metal tray exposed would be a decent large surface for all the dogs. My husband leans toward this option. However, the two medium sized dogs would not be able to look out any of the windows then. Tucker would be very unhappy to not be able to look and smell. I figured those two and one of the larger dogs would likely be on the seat and the other large dog on the floor. She is older and tends to like things solid under her.

I guess we will have to take some rides and figure out what works best for our crew. Thanks for the input!

Can someone post a pic of the fold out metal trays? I have lockable storage bins under the rear 70:30 double seat.

Not sure if the small images will come out. but I hope you both will get the idea. I had three boxers running around the back of my F250 on my the cargo area With a matt to keep them from sliding from side to side. Claws and pads would not do much for grip on a metal cargo plate. One of the pictures show with no cargo or storage bin. I would have two or more dogs in my truck and having them go back and forth with each other in there, having the uneven surface I would be scared they would hurt their hip, leg, or paw. To me the cargo shelf with the matt is the safest for my puppies. I would love to fill a small gap between the cargo floor and the door pockets, but it has not seem to be a problem. Now I have two Mastiffs and they seem to get by just fine. :-) Good luck to you both.
