I pulled the codes today on a friends 90 F-150 302. the codes it spit out were 12, 13, 16, 73. I was hoping that someone could point us in the right direction to get this thing fixed. The problem is that it wont idle. When you first start it and its in cold idle mode then it will idle until the rpm's start to come down then it shuts off like you turn the key off. It also smells rich at the exhaust when its running. I have a list of codes but I dont understand what code 16 is, (IDM signal not recieved), what is the IDM.
Need more inf.: does the engine stay running if you keep your foot in the gas or does it just die.
Does the engine run poorly? If the engine runs fine while giving it gas its likely a dirty idle air bypass/throttle body. Never seen a code 16 -IDM . I think IDM is ignition module related .I am not familiar with the ignition wiring system so I am of no help there. hope this helps!
yes it does stay running if you keep your foot on the pedal. other than it wont idle it runs fine, just smells a little rich at the exhuast while its running.
Try pulling the intake hose off at the throttle body and spray with intake cleaner/carb cleaner while engine is at about 1500 or so rpm "clean it good" then back of idle and see if it will stabilize . Dirty throttle bodies cause crazy idle. If that doesn't do it then pull your idle air bypass and clean. I would also check the fuel pressure to eliminate the possibility of a lean fuel condition. If it was running very rich it would blow black smoke out the tailpipe.
Just checked the manual. None of those codes are listed. Maybe your scan tool is bad. Autozone will check them for free. Many other parts stores will also. Good luck!
Sorry about my answer on the codes being wrong. I looked up the codes in the code scanner manual, and they do have them listed. Why are they not listed in the Haynes manual? Just curious about the missing codes in Haynes.
Also, great site Broncodata. Thanks for posting it.
Speaking of codes..Anyone know a useful info site for the 96 and newer Fords with the OBD II.
I'm looking for the right test equipment for this type of data-link. I've seen scanners from 2 hundred up to thousands.
Any personnal experience with this newer technology?
