My 85 F250 broke down on me yesterday heading home it just sputtered and died I figured this was no big deal because the truck does this to me every couple months and its usually just the fuel pump relays. The real problems started when I got the truck home and tried to start it again, when I put my key into the on position usually my radio and everything turns on but this time nothing happened and the engine started cranking with the key in the on position so I replaced the ignition lock cylinder and it still does the same thing. So I talked to one of my friends at Checker and he said it sounded like an Ignition switch so I replaced that and now the truck starts but the starter won't disengage and the truck is moving forward while the shifter is in park. I have no idea what is going wrong and its my daily driver so I need this problem fixed soon if you guys have any ideas please let me know.
I'm assuming this problem (starter won't disengage) began immediately after replacing the
ignition switch, correct? If so, I'm going to guess the switch on the column needs adjusting;
I forget how it's officially done but I think it involves a drill bit in a hole. This problem could
also be caused by a sticking starter solenoid on the pass side fender.
Dunno about the trans problem, did this problem also begin directly after replacing the
ignition switch?
Yes the problem with the trans began after I replace the ignition switch I talked to another friend of mine and he said it could be the neutral safety switch but if that was the case why would I be able to crank the engine?
I think ctubutis is confusing removing the lock cylinder with adjustment of the electrical portion of the switch which if farther down the steering column.
(using a drill bit to depress the tumbler retainer)
Do you have tilt column?
This sounds like classic symptoms of a broken actuator rod.
ok so I bought a new starter solenoid thinking that it was sticking well now the problem is worse after I installed the solenoid I tried to start the truck it has the same problems but now the truck isn't rolling forward but the starter still wouldn't disengage so I turned the truck off or so I thought the starter was still cranking even without keys in the ignition and just as I was about to disconnect the battery the starter shut off I have no idea what's going on I've replaced the tumbler, ignition switch, ignition module thats mounted on the driver side fender the starter solenoid and the starter is only about 3 months old any idea guys? I can't figure it out and I don't have the money to take it to a mechanic
Solenoids suck now. I went through FIVE new ones before I found one that worked.
Genuine Motorcraft and Standard/Blue Streak included.
Try pulling the little actuating wire off while it is doing it.
If it stops cranking it is the ignition switch.
If not, and you have to hit the solenoid to stop it, it has welded internally and the contacts are ****
