u joints

okay..i got an 89 f250 4wd..i blew the ujoints on the axle...when putting the ujoints they all went easy except one...it is like not even 1mm from allowing the snap ring to lock in.. my question is...can i just put a little weld or tac weld on there to hold it in? i do really see why i couldnt but just wanted someone elses input. thanks!

You probaly do not have all the needles in right, that is just about the only thing that would stop it from going back together all the way.

Dont weld it though.
One time a needed like a hairs width to get it to go in all the way so i took my grinder and took a little bit off of the snap rings. But i would recommend NOT doing that since it is stupid and dangerous. The only reason i did it to mine is because i am very rarely over 5 miles from my house so it would not have been to big of a deal if something would have happened.(Live in a kind of small town). 7,000 miles ago and it still there, but still i dont recommend it.

If you have the snap ring on .. on the other side of the joint try giving the cap a little tap with a large punch and hammer. You just might need to seat the other side to the snap ring. ( you would be taping / driving the cap that is still in need of the snap ring in or down. )

I`m with pro70 on this. Probably one or more needles trapped between cap and end of cross. I think I would take it apart and look.
If you do ever have to weld a cap to secure it you are better setting a washer on to the cap and tack welding the washer to the yoke.

I used to have the luxury of a huge bench vice, and I'd press them in with sockets.

I've also broken a needle or 2 doing that and jam a needle piece in the end cap so it will Never go in all the way.

I just love my shot filled deadblow hammer but it sounds like you need an extra paper thickness and maybe one more sharp ka Rack with a scary hammer.

I'll bet you've notices that the keeper snaprings may be punched, meaning one side is flat and the other is sorta curved from being stamped out of a sheet.

If that's the sort of thing you're looking at, you've gotta be close.

What's a needle diameter btw? are you THAT far out?
I've chipped needles and had tiny pieces lodge in there too.
or even dead particles from the old one.

I also remember having to get a tiny dremel wheel and clean out the snap ring grooves.

I just hope you're not using a snowbank for a workbench from the looks of the weather channel this morning.

Good luck.

Makes me want to go check and grease mine.
