my undercarrage is starting to get rust spots so i was thinking or getting the rust off and painting it, is it ok to paint the axles etc.? will it damage any of the parts if paint gets on them. if anyone has done this before or has any info thanks in advance!
I wouldn't paint my shocks, but I think anything metal would be fine to paint other than that. Go over to the 73-79 forum and look up por-15. I'm planning on painting the undercarriage of my truck with that whenever I get the funds and the weather.
Awsome thanks, I don't realy have the ability to take like the axles off and everything is it still ok to do all that or will I miss some stuff because of it?
Remove heavy scale with wire wheel and putty knife
Apply POR-15 metal prep (acid etch)
Pressure wash
Allow to dry completely (compressed air helps)
Spread plastic under the truck
Wear clothing you no longer care about - long sleves and nitrile or vinyl gloves
Apply POR-15 with a chip brush
Be prepared to do the entire project, because once open there is limited pot life on the can. Also put plastic between the cap and the can or you will cement the can lid on, and will be sorry.
Immediately remove POR-15 drips, because once it hardens (including on you) it is there forever.
I like the rattle cans for touch up, but prefer the quarts for this project.
At the same time, apply Fluid Film to fittings, tranny pan, shock mounts, brake line fittings, etc.
