i just got done replacing the rear tank pump and the front booster pump but i still have a problem..i put in a new filter and i seem to be losing fuel pressure . the van seems like it just runs out of gas when driving.and it sounds as though the pump is trying to get fuel but cant. then all the sudden it picks back up and is fine for 1/2 mile or soo then bam out of gas again.could it be the tank transfer or is something else wrong??fuel pressure switch if there is one or what
i had this same problem on my first ford
i have since learned that when you disconnect the fuel lines from the pump you actually need a special littl tool
i pretty much butchered my fuel lines pulling them apart and i was suckign air
and that was causing me to get that running out of gas feeling
like i said i have since learned
lol
88 ford van e 150 dual tanks. no real mods just 400 in new pumps filters and no go!!!the fuel fiter seems to be full of gas but seems like the van just runs out of gas..i read the post from another guy and he says i butchered my fuel lines up???they came apart and went back together with no real problem..anyways if they were sucking air would they not be also spraying fuel???no fuel leaks so im lost please help these pumps and what not are getting expensive not to mention what it would cost to have someone else fix this
Are you using a Haynes manual to help diagnose the problem? How about a fuel pressure gauge? Vacuum gauge? Digital multimeter (DMM)? All those together probably cost less than one pump, which you may not have even needed to replace.
the rear pump had to be replaced because of the steel lines going into rotting away and the fact that ford will not sell the sending unit part of it sepratly without the pump. then after replacing that part the front booster pump went out ..i made sure that it was not the relay and ended up tracing the problem to the booster pump.was getting power but would not work.pulled it out and would not work putting power to it.so bought new one also replaced filter as not to void warrenty on new pump.now van runs again just not right at all.all the info to get me this far has come from this web sight so i am doing as told.just looking for the next fix. i got this van from a friend parents so i dont know if this was a problem before or not they are not here to ask.what about the air sucking thing from the guy above is this possible? just seems like it would leak fuel if it can suck air
you should check your fuel presure
it wouldnt take much of an iar leak to affect your presure
it could leak fuel if the air leak is in the right spot
most likely it would just suck air into the fuel system
The entire fuel system is at a higher pressure than the atmosphere, so it would never suck air INTO a fuel line. The only place air could POSSIBLY enter is at the fuel pump in the tank, but if the tank is more than ~1/2 full, it's totally submerged making that impossible also.
hey guys thanks for the input, but, what should i do?????im just not sure.if it had a carburator i could have fix it by know.i just dont know where to go next. it acts as though the filter is pluged the way it runs out of gas but it wont totally die out.anyways thats new also.put in nuetral for ten seconds and it gos for bout 1/4 mile then starts to starve out again. also if you floor it or give more than 1/2 throttle it does the same thing just dies right out,but stays running.could it be something in the fuel injection part ???
no i have not.i am not sure on the prceedure or tools requiered to do this. i have a pressure gauge but am not sure if it is the right kind, where to hook it up to and what kind of readings i should get?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jan-03 AT 08:52 AM (EST)]The Haynes manual explains it all, but the short answer is connect it to the schrader (tire) valve on the fuel rail & post what you get at 1) key on engine off, 2) engine idling, 3) engine revved hard momentarily, 4) throttle released suddenly and engine returning to idle, & 5) the time that it appears to run out of gas (you can drive with the gauge stuck out the hood if you have to).
i got home today and took van for ride and it ran fine no running out of gas at all gonna chow and go for a long ride with cell phone just in case.. could i have trapped air in the lines taking all the pumps and filters out???anyways ill check the pressures and post back tonight .thanks for all your insight. i really appreciate it!!!!
