My buddy got a f150 about 4 years ago and it was running crappy.
He got it running good about 2yr. ago by replacing the fuel pump, rebuilding the heads, and some other parts.
He decided to sell the truck and the new owner let it sit ( I think at least a year). My buddy bought it back and he took it in to get it smogged this past November 2010 and it failed with the following values:
----------------%CO2--%O2----------HC (PPM)-------------CO (%)---------------NO (PPM)
TEST-----RPM--MEAS--MEAS-----MAX--GP--MEAS------MAX---GP---MEAS-----MAX--GP---MEAS---RESULTS
15 mph---1736---8.1---0.7-------80---332---342-------0.41--1.88--10.05-----690--1908--102----gross pulluter
25 mph---1603---8.9---0.6-------64---282---331-------0.71--2.32---8.89-----592--1708--132----gross polluter
From what he knows, its all original except for headers.
I suspected that the cat was not getting downstream air from the smog pump based on theses values. I checked to see it the tube connected to the cat was connected and indeed it was (in hindsight I now wonder if the rubber connecters are torn and causing air from the smog pump to leak out rather than be injected into the cat).

For good measure to check the integrity of the engine, I connected a vacuum gauge and it read a steady 18.5 at idle. Does anyone have any input on this, he has to pass ca smog requirements and he’s really fixated on keeping his truck this time after all the work he initially put into it.

Reason: chart posted as garbled text
Can someone please tell me how i can post the smog results in a chart. I copy and pasted a charted I created in MS Word and it showed up as garbled text. Then I spaced out the typed results in an edit of the initial post and it took out all the spaces I made.
Please help.
When my truck failed smog, I performed both the KOER and KOEO test. The code I got was for "No Secondary Air-Right Side" IIRC. Here is the link to the thread I started about it https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...em-solved.html
I ended up replacing both the TAB and TAD solenoids, along with the O2 sensor for good measure. It passed smog first time around. HTH
Thanks Ed, were gonna pull the codes off it friday and see what it gives us. I will followup with what we find.Glad to see that you were able to successfully troubleshoot and correct your problem.
I always recommend the seafoam treatment. I do it before tx emissions tests and never have any problems. Also, drive the truck around before getting it tested to get that cat good and hot.
elevated CO emissions tend to mean that you are running rich, and the HC is a little high too possibly caused by a mis-fire. I would check the ignition system and make sure the timing is correct and the plugs and wires are in good shape. I would also check to make sure the o2 sensor is working correctly.
I agree. Hopefully he read the entire thread that I linked to because I did all that (except for the O2 sensor) before the first test, which failed anyway.
