Cold Weather Window Fogging
New to the forum here, although I have been lurking for a few months. Lot's of good info. not to mention great pictures!!!
Have a question - on my '73 dentside (my very first Ford truck, brought it home labor day weekend 2010!), I am getting a little bit of window fogging in cold weather. Not bad, but just enough to be annoying.
Back in the good 'ol days (mid/late 70's, early 80's) I experienced a few heater core leaks in various vehicles, which would fog everything over very thoroughly. Of course, the problem was obvious, you could see (and smell) the antifreeze spittin' out on the floorboard when the heater core decided to blow a leak.
Currently in my truck, I can neither see nor smell any antifreeze leaking from the heater core. But could possibly a very minute amount be seeping from it and causing my mild fogging problems? Or is there some other affliction these Fords have, that I am not aware of? Any thoughts or ideas??? (By the way, heat only, no air conditioning).
Thanks in advance for your replies!
Paul
I have put a little electric space heater in the cab, and allowed it to run for an hour or two in order to "pre-heat" the cab interior before driving. Seems to help, but there still can be a slight amount of fogging, depending on how cold it is.
Also, does turning on the heater/defroster make it worse?
To answer your question, yes the heater core could be leaking just a little and staying in the heater box. What little was coming out of the box might be getting soaked up by the carpet to where you wouldnt notice it. Usually though, like you say, youd smell it. But not always. I would feel of the carpet (if it has carpet) and of the seats. If they're wet, look at all the body seals to see if water could be getting in any where.
So, you havnt noticed the coolant level in the radiator dropping any?
Thanks Justin, unless somebody else offers any different ideas, I may just assume that I need to scrutinize the heater core next time I get a chance.
Paul.
