I'm leaning towards an Equus 3145 scanner. Is there a better one- does more, better instructions, accompanying software, etc that balances extras with cost?
What would I be getting with the Equus 3145. I saw it recommended by a fella on this forum who seems to know his stuff is why I'm looking at it. Thanks, Keystonepaul
There is no output port for realtime data from the OBD-1 computer so there are no "scanners" available for it, the device suggested is a simple code reader since codes are the only thing there is to see with a simple plug-in device.
There is a way to get realtime data from some OBD-1 computers, it requires the installation of a module that overrides the internal memory on the computer therefore making it possible to see the data from sensors and the computer control responses, but this also requires a laptop be connected with certain software files in place that match the specific EFI computer it is attached to. As mentioned this only works with a limited number of OBD-1 computers and the truck computers are not part of this group for the most part.

That's not my experience. I've logged realtime data through the OBD-1 connector on a 1994 and 1996 OBD-1 truck with an AutoXray 5000. However the implementation is fairly poor, with some PIDs like ACT just reading volts while ECT reads degrees F. RPM and Closed look is available, and a few switches. However I can't recommend the 5000 as it refuses to read codes on the same vehicle, so I had to get the simple code reader anyway.
