If you wanted a diesel car for a daily driver that is easy to work on and with a few mods could be as dependable as an 7.3. What would you get.
I picked this up several months ago. Has the bulletproof 5 cylinder turbodiesel. Real easy to work on. 'Vintage' features by todays standards, but for a DD, works great for me. So far, parts are surprisingly inexpensive and easy to find.

What year and model is that? and what did you spend if you dont mind
VW TDI but a fella at work says you have to change the timing belt out every 100,000 mile. You could do it yourself but he paid over 800.00 for a swap out.
It's an '83 300D. I paid $2000 for it. Had 114k miles on it. It has a salvage title due to a rear end collision, all repaired of course.
Sweet deal to say the least Alvin..

They are, 40-50 MPG's but that timing belt change just irkes me, why cut corners with a belt, thats just me. The engine is made for longevity, make it that way all around.

Thanks Mike, I thought so too. I also have heard the TDI's are great cars. Probably the biggest advantages being the MPG's, modern features and comforts. The turbo version of my car was built from 1980-1985, so you have to be willing to deal with an 'old car'. I don't mind and actually feel right at home in it.
I have a 2005.5 vw, tdi jetta. bought it new. so far 112,000 miles. 47 mpg, timing belt change, 10,000 mile oil change's, one fuel filter, and 4 rotors and pads at 105,000 miles. so far a great car.
Depends, really.. the mercedes and vw are both cool, but the older benz is by far easier to work on and parts can be had for less.
Is your truck paid for? I have debated the idea of getting a different DD, but my truck had been paid off for a long time and it really doesn't ask for anything (other than diesel). had some tranny and a/c repairs done, but she is 12 years old. still like driving it better than the wife's 2010 edge.
