Got rid of my baby, wish I hadn't so bought another. This is one excellent F100 Step from the year of our lord 1981. Problem, it has a 300 and I want a V8. Looked at the 5.0 and the 460 a couple others. How much trouble am I looking at from 6 to 8 and what engine would you guys look for?
Changing the I6 to a V8 requires getting the frame perches, radiator and engine wiring harness for the V8. A 302 or 351W will bolt up to same transmission, while the 351M/400 or 460 will require a different bellhousing (manual trans) or complete trans (auto).
For the effort required, swapping in a 302 to replace a good running 300 is very little (if any) gain.
ok, well right now my big problem with the 6 is it has this little air cleaner that will choke the motor dead in a couple weeks. I would like to find something bigger and better but nothing fits that tiny carb. Any suggestions?
If this is going to be a play toy, you can hop the six cylinder up, putting a small 4bbl on it with a aftermarket intake.
If you are going to drive this everyday, I would keep the original aircleaner and everything that goes with it hooked up. It will not choke the motor.
Since this is a f100, I bet you have a very low numbered rearend (3.00 or less) and it's setup for good fuel mileage. This is a low revving truck engine with lots of low end power.
Personnally I really like the 5.8L if I was going to go with a V8. Halfway decent fuel economy and more power than the 5.0L. Big blocks are fun but I know I could never afford them for gas.
It is a toy. My driver is a Lincoln LS. The stock cleaner is gone, I got it with a small paper filter rig.
A lot of people can lift the hood and show off a v8. Not many people can lift the hood and show a hot rodded six. It's not a common thing to do, so it takes some research, and it's more expensive than a v8, but it would be different.
With the 300, you can stick your head out of the window going down the road and it prolly won't blow off. They are not built for speed. BUT, the low end is truly impressive. And as Franklin2 said, why not have something different from everyone else?

When I see a hotrodded six I just wonder, why? Lol, but that's just me
what about towing with this truck? Need to pull boat, horse trailer, motorcycle trailer, etc. Will it do it?
You need to find out what gear ratio you have in the rearend. Look for the code posted on your door jamb. Also what transmission do you have? Those components will determine how it's going to tow.
