Oil Consumption Question

The only vehicle I ever bought "new" is my 1999 Ford F250SD, 4WD with manual locking hubs and a 5-speed transmission.

It's only got about 65,000 miles on it now, but it uses oil. No more now than it ever did. So even from new, this engine used oil. I probably have to add a quart every 1500 miles or so. Not really sure, as I havn't kept records.

There's no leaks, no smoke in exhaust, or anything. I'm not even very concerned, just curious.

Is this normal for the 5.4 liter engine?

I don't think there is anything to worry about if it has done it since new, but I do not think it is really NORMAL for the 5.4.

I had a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4 and with 120K miles, it did not use any oil between 5K mile intervals.

Yes, I was trying to use miles and US quarts, but I think I am getting close to having about 5000 km on it since the last oil change,...at least 4000 km anyway.

And it was down about 1.5 litres, which is embarassing as I usually check it more often and add oil once it needs about 1/2 a litre.

Probably just a bad combination of parts using extremes of various tolerance limits.

i.e. blow-by taking saome oil out the PCV and back into the intake.

Jim....your post must have appeared while I was typing my last reply.

It's sort of of starting to look like my oil consumption isn't unique.
