I know this info is probly on this site somewhere, but im new and searching has not turned up much. From what i have read (thanks to all for the great info) I think the IRP may be bad. Im working on my dad's truck, 1995, over 200k miles 7.3 all stock. The truck sometimes starts, and sometimes wont, HPOP is full of oil, batteries are new, and we have about 40 to 50 psi of fuel pressure at the schrader valve when cranking. When the truck does start, it will rev fine (havent road tested it). It will idle fine for a few min, then starts running rough then shuts off. It doesnt die slowly, just shuts down, and wont start unless you give it some throttle, then it will run again, idle...until it shuts down again. (If we throttle it when it starts running rough, it will rev) Sometimes it wont start at all, (i know how bad starting fluid is) but when we use it, she fires up, and the symptoms become the same as before. I unplugged the sensor on the engine's left side front(3 wire), i believe its call the ICM? And the engine will run at about idle speed with the throttle to the floor. So I am asking for some wisdom on where to go from here.
Do you have a check engine light on? Some of the systoms discribed sounds like the CPS. It could be the IPR if its sticking open or closed. I would try the CPS first and go from there. People who know more then I do will come along.
Ya forgot to mention that . The CEL comes on when the truck decides to shut down, then is hard or impossible to start unless i turn the key off then back on and the CEL doesnt come back on. Is there any way to test the sensor maybe with a DVOM or something?
What you unplugged was the icp. Glenn may be right on a sticky ipr. I'm not sure though, see what others say. Have you checked the idm for water? Do you have any way to read codes?
I could borrow a cheap code reader on monday maybe, but i would rather not wait if i dont have to. Im assuming its possible to take the ipr out, clean it, and put new o rings on it? Already changed the CPS, sorry glen for not mentioning that
if / when your in that area...inspect the IPR connector - Diesel get's the watertight seal's gooy and eats/melts the IPR wiring....also check the IPR brass nut and coil body for looseness...can't be loose....
I have always wondered about that stupid sheet metal nut, why didn't they put a normal nut on there? I'm always afraid to over do it when I tighten it, then sometimes find it loose!
Thanks for the IPR info, that was exactly what i needed. So i finally got around to taking it out and cleaning the dam thing. Now the truck starts and will run (i'l road test it tomorrow) but if it idles for any amount time it will just shut off, and with no warning. Then to get it to start again you have to give it alot of throttle. Then it may idle for a while longer, or may not idle at all. Any ideas on where to go from here? CEL does not come on either.
