Hey guys, I usually hang around the f150 part of the forums, but I've got a question for my old man. He handed down his 05 F150 to my younger brother and my dad got himself a 2005 F250 with a 5.4. It's a crew cab, 20" wheels and 37's. He says with all the extra weight the truck feels sluggish compared to the old 150 with a 5.4. He's wanting to either do an Edge, or possibly gryphon or re-gear it to a 4.30 or something similar. Any suggestions what he should try ?
A set of 4.88s and a 5 Star tuner should set the truck up nicely as said above. The tuner more than likely will not be able to correct the speedo however. You will need to take care of that seperatly.
I got an '06 F250 almost exact to the one you got but it's a super cab. I bought a super chips cortex to wake the 5.4 up a bit. I know your not going to get magic out of it but every little bit helps with these motors. With the 37" toyo mt's that I have, I've noticed that on the 91 octane performance setting she'll get up and go but nothing will beat the fact of re-gearing. Ford Fanatic was right about going for the bigger gears. I went to 4.56's and that's where the real noticeable difference can be felt.
With anything over a 4.56 gear you'll probably need a new carrier to mount the gears to, on account of they should be a thick cut ring, and that'll push up the cost of a regear. Even with the extra cost, a regear is the only way to fix the issue.
