Heres the deal. I have a shell on my truck, full time unless im pulling the 5er, and my registration is coming up soon. I get hit hard on the weight tax as my truck is registered as commercial. But I want to change it to personal as I do have a shell and save some cash. Pretty soon my son takes it and I dont use it for work much anymore. I currently have those clamps but do I need to actually bolt it down to make it permanent? I live in Cal
I wish I could help but I dont know Cali rules, I just want to know how the story ends, if you need a loan to register it let me know,Gerry
I`ll send ya my address,Thanks Gerry,lol
Check this out: I fill up and come to find out this station has been compromised so my bank card info got stolen via a skimmer. Some perp managed to charge a trip to Africa and Disney world. Anybody else want to go just let me know

Until about 15 years ago when we got a semi-conservative governor, Massachusetts used to require all pickups to be registered as commercial vehicles, regardless of use. It was ridiculous but a huge revenue enhancer for the state. Commercial plates meant higher tolls, fines for drviing on some roads, etc.
I have a "friend" who beat the system by keeping his Ranger registered in Virginia for 8 years after he got out of the Navy. Even went back to VA Beach to buy a new one.
I am honestly surprised that MA hasn't revived that tax on truck owners yet.
Hank, I'm pretty sure that a shell is sufficient for allowing it to be registered non-commercial. A buddy of mine (who used to work for DMV and knows a few of the rules!) has an '89 F350 crew-cab dually and it was registered non-commercial by the previous owner, and all he had was a shell on it.
